(22) Culture: The student understands how the development of ideas has influenced institutions and societies.

DESCRIPTION 1. Students will research the city facilities of Carrollton, seek input from their fellow students, prepare a list of questions, go to Carrollton City Hall, meet with the Mayor of Carrollton, and discuss these matters with her.
2. Students will research the city facilities of Farmers Branch, seek input from their fellow students, prepare a list of questions, go to Farmers Branch City Hall, meet with the Mayor of Farmers Branch, and discuss these matters with him.
3. Students will organize and implement a talent show, including cultural dancing. They will organize the publicity, sell tickets, review the prospective acts, and award prizes.
TIME REQUIRED One hour per day. The number of days will depend on the amount of time needed to complete the lessons.
MATERIALS Posters, decorations, prizes

TEACHER TIPS 1. Involve students in decision-making.
2. Have student council club members bring in other talented students.
3. Have students listen to input from other students who may not have time to participate actively.
4. Help students develop self-expression to make sure they are communicating their ideas effectively.
5. Recognize and encourage participation from all types of students, at all levels and from all cultures.
ADAPTATIONS 1. Enlist ESL and Special Education personnel to make sure all students are participating to an optimal degree.
2. Check frequently for comprehension.
3. Use verbal instructions and accept verbal input.
4. Adapt activities to different proficiency levels.
5. Give ample time for completion of work.
6. Link to students’ past learning and concepts.
7. Use scaffolding techniques to assure understanding.
