DESCRIPTION This unit is 5 classes long.

Day 1: Children are introducted to aquarium nets. They break up into small groups and use the nets to go outside and find bugs, plants, and parts of trees on the grounds of the campus. They bring a few things back, and we discuss our findings as a group.

Days 2-4: A specific item is chosen for students to find. They have to locate it and bring it back.

Day 5: In this final class, students draw pictures of each thing they found.

TIME REQUIRED 45 minutes, 1 unit per week
MATERIALS Aquarium nets, used plastic shopping bags
APPROXIMATE COST $1.75 per aquarium net. I would buy 1 net per 4 children and have them share.
TEACHER TIPS 1. This lesson is fantastic after a rainstorm. The kids love digging through puddles.
2. The children will get a little dirty, so have wet clothes for them to clean up right before class is over.
3. Allow the children a little more than half the class time to get outside and really explore!
4. Make sure they are supervised outdoors at all times.
5. Get involved too!
ADAPTATIONS 1. Have older children log their findings and note different habitats. You can also have them research what they find and do a full report on it!
2. Have the children touch and smell the different things that they find.
3. Have the children research what is found in their environment and then get outside and find it!
