| DESCRIPTION | Making paper beads in the style of the people of Chad and Niger in Africa |
| TIME REQUIRED | 45 minutes per day, 1 day per week, total of 5 lessons for one 5-week session (easily adapted to more days/weeks by adding beading days) |
| MATERIALS | Magazines with colorful, slick pages; rulers, pencils, scissors, glue, toothpicks Heavy quilting thread and embroidery needles Pop-up wipes for easy clean-up of hands and desk tops |
| APPROXIMATE COST | $1.00 or less per student, depending on beads selected. To bring cost down, make more paper beads and use less or no craft beads. |
| TEACHER TIPS | 1. High energy and enthusiasm transfer to students. 2. Planning and organization are key components for success. 3. Be willing to jump in and help make beads yourself. 4. Good classroom management skills are a must. 5. Good activity to be completed near a holiday (beads are a nice handmade gift). |
| ADAPTATIONS | 1. Pair students with complementing abilities and skills (high with low, regular with special). 2. Be ready to help with one-on-one modeling and instructions. 3. Use simple instructions with brief, step-by-step diagrams and notes on the board. 4. Model all skills and review before entering project. 5. Working as a group, make and sort beads by color, assigning jobs according to skills. |
