Keynote Speaker Deneen Frazier Bowen

Deneen Frazier Bowen energized and engaged Texas 21st CCLC conference participants through her honest and straightforward portrayal of diverse students in her The Natives are Restless keynote performance. She was the vehicle through which participants were able to witness student experiences and the challenges they face in our schools every day: connecting their school day to the world they live in and their struggles as they become disengaged from school. She shed light on students’ voice, resilience, hope, and sheer creativity that is brimming from their minds and how they use these digital tools and their ingenuity in meaningful ways. Daneen made participants feel empowered and inspired to create possibilities for all students in this digital age.

Keynote Speaker Aurelio Montemayor

Aurelio Montemayor extended an invitation to Texas 21st CCLC grantees to work collaboratively with Title 1 schools that are in their fourth year of improvement for meeting AYP through IDRA's Texas Parent Information Center. During his inspiring keynote presentation, Aurelio provided the lens for meaningful parental engagement and involvement, guiding participants through an asset-based model for parent roles and leadership. Conference participants were able to reflect on their own assumptions and forge new possibilities for meaningful parent and afterschool partnerships.

Aurelio Montemayor is the Texas Parent Information Resource Center Director at the Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA). Learn more about IDRA's work at www.idra.org/Texas_IDRA_PIRC.htm.
